The key objectives of the Friends of Port Willunga

  • To promote sensitive revegetation and the maintenance of passive open space for public use at the former Port Willunga Caravan Park site.
  • To promote a heritage walking trail at the Port Willunga foreshore that marks our Aboriginal and European heritage.
  • To promote preservation of the ‘Green Triangle’ between Port Willunga and historic Aldinga as passive open space.
  • To promote local input in creating a Master Plan for future development that covers the area west of Main South Road from Maslin Beach to Sellicks Hill, in the context of the wider Willunga Basin.
  • To have as a guiding development principle (west of Main South Road), the idea of rural to urban transition, focusing on creating rural and vegetation buffers along Main South Road, preserving valuable and iconic open landscapes and views, and incorporating cluster (village-style) development.
  • On transport issues, to focus on a more viable transport service for this region in the immediate and mid-term future, via improved feeder bus services from surrounding local areas to the rail centre at Seaford.
  • To investigate and promote the idea of a Willunga Basin Protection Act and to support MLC Robert Brokenshire’s bill that was introduced in the South Australian Parliament in February 2009.
  • To investigate the idea of a ‘Willunga Basin Foundation’ as a charitable foundation for buying back and preserving farming land.
  • To support a proposed bid for World Heritage Status for the agricultural landscapes from Clare Valley to the Fleurieu Peninsula.
